Appearance:
Mapleshade is a red classic tabby. The contrast between his dark red markings and his pale orange base color is striking. His strong body sports swirls, while his paws are ringed with darker stripes. His pelt helps him camouflage in leaffall, but it can sometimes give his presence away, especially in leafbare, when he looks like a flame in the snow.Personality:
He was also born with no tail at all, and his hind quarters are quite round. This never seemed to bother him, though, and he is perfectly fine tailless.
His paws are huge and very round, and his muscles are taut under his dense and soft pelt. He is quite large, for an Iceclan cat, and also very strong. His hind legs, especially, are stronger than the rest of the Iceclan cats. He is a very good jumper and will sometimes seem to fly across the air, but not very agile, because of his bulk. He uses brute force to beat other cats.
His ears are a little small and paper thin, with little tufts of red at the top of them. His eyes are very bright orange, brighter, even, than the main shade of his pelt. His nose is rather small and pink, so are his pads.
Mapleshade is quite silent and hard-working, but can sometimes come off as cocky and irritable. He doesn't really want to ever be leader, but he found that being the deputy was the best way to get everything done well. Indeed, he doesn't have a very high opinion of other cats, and is reluctant to give others responsibility when he can do something himself. He enjoys organizing border patrols, going on them and hunting, and taking care of his clan is the only thing he ever really thinks about.History:
He can be harsh, at times, especially since he doesn't trust a single cat in the world. He also rather dislikes when a job is poorly done and there was obviously little effort put into it, and will definitely the scold the cat who is responsible. Even though he can be bossy, he respects his leader enough to know never to tread on his grounds. His leader's word is final, even if he would've gotten the job done differently, and he is not mutinous.
Though he never thinks seriously of finding himself a mate, he does think he'd be an admirable father for his kits. He is very soft with youngsters, and takes excellent care of them. To him, kits aren't just another duty, they are a small miracle of life, and he has a soft spot for them.
He dislikes seeing the fresh-kill pile empty, the prey in it, stale, the elders and kits unfed, the dens dirty, the cats, smelly. If you don't want to provoke one of his foul mood spells, you'd better make sure to do what he asks.
Maplekit was the only kit of his mother Fernflower's last litter. Since his kithood, Maplekit was a very large cat, contrasting greatly with the other cats of Iceclan. Them, lithe and elegant, he, strong and stocky. The fact that he was born tailless didn't help him gain their respect either. Along with the sneers of fellow kits and litter mates, he had to go through the looks of pity the adults shot him. Indeed, they never thought he would be able to have enough balance to be a great warrior without a tail.Other:
Fernflower retired to the elders as soon as her son was apprenticed.
When he was apprenticed, he was eager to start training and finally gain the respect of those warriors who sneered when they saw him jump halfway across a den onto his mother's tail. They didn't like his powerful jumps, not one bit. The fact that he wasn't really one to wade into the water for fun also often made them look at him as though he were a monster, seeing as it was really a clan of swimmers.
When he was finally apprenticed, he vowed to become the best. And did he ever work hard to do so. He wasn't a very good swimmer at first, and his mentor noticed this and made him practice swimming probably even more than hunting and fighting. Though at the time Maplepaw resented him for picking on him so much, he notices today that his mentor was, in fact, trying to make him more like an Iceclan cat to help him fit in. He also didn't encourage Maplepaw to practice his amazing leaps, but this Maplepaw couldn't resist doing whenever he had the occasion to. He just loved impressing his fellow apprentices by flying onto a bird or a squirrel over a fox-length away.
When he received his warrior name, it was the best day of his life. The suffix the leader decided on that day was shade, because he preferred to spend time on land and under the shade of trees.
He had trained for moons and moons harder than any other, never complaining and always trying to be the best warrior he could be, and finally, all his efforts came to fruit. Even at this early age, he saw there were things that could be improved in the running of the clan. When he was still a 'paw, he already saw some things that needed changing, but always assumed he was simply the one that didn't understand correctly. Now that he was older, he saw he would have to fix these things, in fact. Working harder than ever, he decided to become the next deputy in order to have some control over what was done. Not once did he want the power for his own; his every move was for the well fare of his beloved clan.
His mother Fernflower died peacefully in her sleep a few seasons later, when Mapleshade was still a young warrior. He had been expecting this, since Fernflower had been growing old and weak, but it was still a hard blow. After the proper grieving time, he had a little difficulty picking himself back up again, but when he finally set his mind back to work and clan life, he was even more hard-working than ever.
Taking on every extra patrol and constantly hunting for his clan in his free time, he soon became one of the most respected warriors. The stumbling, jumping, water-hating kit with no tail was completely forgotten. One morning, the old deputy fell asleep and never awoke.
He had one apprentice, Twirlingpaw, a blue-gray tom with black stripes and swirls on his flanks. Twirlingpaw was quite unlike his name, and preferred to stay asleep under a bush over practicing his fighting or hunting skills. Mapleshade was quite exasperated with him at times, but nonetheless somehow managed to make him into an acceptable warrior after more moons of training than it was usually necessary. He earned himself the name Twirlingsnail, which fits his personnality entirely. Twirlingsnail himself quite likes his name, and can easily make fun of himself. Mapleshade can't say he's very proud of his slouching and procrastinating apprentice, but he still maintains an acceptable relationship with Twirlingsnail.
Immediately, all eyes turned to Mapleshade, as he was the obvious choice for the next deputy, even though he was still very young to take on such responsability. And, indeed, he was chosen to be deputy.
He has been deputy of Iceclan for two seasons, and has yet to help his clan through leaf-bare. For this reason, he is quite nervous about the upcoming moons, but confident he can help his beloved clan through the coldest season.
